Hot Spots: Orlando - Makahiki Luau Dinner Show

Escape Orlando at SeaWorld’s Makahiki Luau at the Seafire Inn. This authentic Polynesian festival truly makes you feel as though you may have gotten onto the wrong plane and landed in Hawaii.

Like most of the dinner shows, the table I was sitting at next to the stage seated eight people, so you can expect to meet some more interesting people from around the world. Soon after you are seated the show begins and gets off to a fiery start, literally. Passing flaming torches is just the beginning, the stunts that follow are nothing short of spectacular.

I was disappointed with the food selection at the Makahiki Luau, the only dinner show that didn’t impress me with their dinner. You don’t have to choose what food you’d like to eat, instead they bring out several options and give a few servings of each. You have to share the food with three strangers, unless you are a group of four or more, which makes it very awkward and ultimately no one ends up eating as much as they could. I feel as though it is awkward enough to be eating with a group of strangers, having to share the same food with everyone is just too awkward, no matter whether this is against Luau tradition or not. As for the food, I also wasn’t real impressed with the quality. The chicken was good, but the pork didn’t have a great flavor. The meal wasn’t horrible, but for the price of $45.95/adult or $29.95/children (3-9 years old) I would expect more.

Overall, the Makahiki Luau deserves two thumbs up for the show, but two thumbs down for the dinner. I only suggest this show if you have no problem sharing your food with strangers or will be going in a group of four or more. I definitely feel as though the show was one of the best in Orlando it is just the dining that is holding this place back.
