If you don't recognize Shiri Appleby by name, you'll probably at least recognize her face. Her brown eyes and brown hair are easily identifiable as she has been acting since she was a young child. She was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 7th, 1978 to father Jerry Appleby and mother Dina Appleby. The name Shiri means "song of mine" in Hebrew. Around the age of four, her parents helped her get into acting and she scored roles in commercials for brands such as M&Ms, Taco Bell, and Cheerios.
The first time Appleby appeared on a television show was in 1984, on the soap opera "Santa Barbara" (1984-1993). Between 1987 and 1999, Appleby had other small roles on television shows like "Doogie Howser, M.D.", "ER", and "7th Heaven". She also had minor roles in movies like "I Love You to Death" and "A Time for Dancing". However, Appleby's first big break came in 1999, when she landed one of the lead roles on the hit show "Roswell."
On the air from 1999-2002, "Roswell" was a show about alien/human hybrids living
among humans in the New Mexico city of Roswell. After auditioning for all three female roles, Appleby was cast as Liz, a human who develops a close bond with one of the aliens. The series was a hit, especially among teens, and Appleby became much more widely known.
Perhaps, the reason Appleby could portray a high schooler so well was because she had a relatively normal high school experience. She took a break from acting while she attended Calabasas High School, instead concentrating on activities like Yearbook, Student Council, and Cheerleading. When she graduated in 1997, she was voted "Most Spirited" by her classmates. Appleby also attended the University of Southern California, studying English literature and theatre arts.
Despite her academic success, Appleby still managed to keep a foot in the door in Hollywood. Soon after "Roswell" ended, Appleby landed the role of Jesse Bradford's girlfriend in the teen suspense film "Swimfan". Since then, she has been working steadily, with small roles in television and movies. Appleby has more recently appeared in the TV show "Six Degrees" and in the movie "Charlie Wilson's War," in theaters now.
