| The kids of Beverly Hills High School have everything: unlimited amounts of money, fast cars, the trendiest clothes and always seem to get their way. So, who wants to hear about their problems? Well, back in the 90's, the questions were more along the lines of who didn't want to hear about their problems?
"Beverly Hills, 90210" is perhaps one of the most recognized teen dramas to date. Created by Darren Star in 1990, the show immediately took off on a ten-year stint that set the standard for all follow-up teen television shows. What started off as a simple drama depicting the lives of a handful of rich students at a Beverly Hills high school soon morphed into a soap opera in which the large cast faced a huge variety of obstacles and issues. From love and death, to drugs and alcoholism, to abortion and AIDS, the Beverly Hills gang saw it all; if it was a major social issue in this country, you can bet they dealt with it in one form or another.
The first episode aired on October 4, 1990 with the Walsh family moving from Minnesota to Beverly Hills, and twins Brandon (Jason Priestly) and Brenda (Shannon Doherty) Walsh attempting to fit in at their new high school. Along with the Walshes, the first episode alone introduced viewers to characters Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth), Donna Martin (Tori Spelling), Steve Sanders (Ian Ziering), Andrea Zuckerman-Vasquez (Gabrielle Carteris), and Dylan McKay (Luke Perry), along with the wealthy lifestyle of these California kids.
The gang went through up's and downs for the next ten years, finishing out high school (after repeating their Junior year twice to make the show last longer) and then moving on to college. The large cast saw some changes and new characters in the mid-90's, but loyal fans still continued to avidly tune in every week.
The show was officially cancelled on January 24, 2000, with its last episode airing on May 17th of that same year. The last episode consisted of a wedding between Donna and David Silver (Brian Green), which was the perfect opportunity for the writers to reunite the whole 90210 gang (past and present) one last time.
The show's actors have gone on to bigger and better things since then, but the 90210 spirit still lives on in reruns and the constant references to the show that can be found in countless television shows today. The trials and tribulations of the high-society characters of "Beverly Hills, 90210" helped make the show the quintessential drama of the 90's, and a cult favorite whose characters and issues still live on strongly today.
