Sure, there are no rules to fashion. That’s what fashion is: breaking stereotypes, pushing the envelope and doing what you want. However, there is just one rule to this “no-rule” rule: Dress Appropriately. It is, in my opinion, extremely important and must never be forgotten. In the world of fashion, there are no bibles, no ten commandments and no guidelines that will lead to style heaven. The one and only duty we must fulfill is to dress appropriately….and with that, we shall be blessed.
Now, I am no fashion-goddess nor style-angel...but I do recognize what looks good and what doesn’t. We all do. And in my observations, I have seen many fashion sinners. I want to enlighten them, to show them the way to dressing fashionably and not inappropriately. The obvious are there : dressing for your body type. It is my hope that we all understand that. But, the not-so-obvious’ include wearing tacky and distasteful clothing, accessories that are too loud and shoes that scream for attention (and that’s not good attention, mind you.) Determining what is appropriate where will determine what you shall wear. And that, ladies, is key to being a good fashionista.
Much of the inappropriate clothing I am referring to include apparel with lettering. You know what I’m talking about--those too-tight t-shirts with either of these phrases written across the chest in bold lettering: “SEXY, ” “DIVA,” and/or “HOT.” These t-shirts are not appropriate anywhere. The only place these t-shirts will get you is to fashion hell. Now that’s hot.
Accessories are the realm of fashion where pretty much anything goes. Hardly have I seen someone go wrong with accessories. The one exception? The pile style. Ladies, piling on the accessories does not equal a trendy look. Choose one accessory at a time and you’ll shine.
Choosing the appropriate footwear for an occasion can be challenging. Besides the obvious “no stilettos on campus” or “no flip-flops to weddings,” many sins can be made by choosing the wrong footwear. For instance, while the “wedge” continues to be popular and trendy, it is not okay to wear this style to school or the workplace if it’s heel is above 4-5 inches. It is just not appropriate.
Now, I don’t want to sound like a preacher…but I do think this lesson is important for all ladies to know and understand. Explore and be free in fashion, learn from your mistakes and express yourself. All I ask is that you dress to impress. And nothing impresses more than an appropriate and tasteful style.
Praise Fashion!
