What to Wear? - Be Love-ly

Valentine's Day is long gone now, but the mood of love is here to stay for the Spring and Fall seasons. The Spring 2006 fashion shows proved that love is the current inspiration for fashion, while the recent shows presented during New York Fashion Week continued with that same theme for Fall 2006. Love was and still is in the air. So, adore yourself with fashion's feminine approach and you will be adored as well.

But ladies, the inspirational love we're talking about isn't innocent, "let's dress up in pretty little dresses" love.  The love that has influenced the style scene is a strong, in your face, experienced and mature love.  It's developed, tortured, real and above all sexy. This season's woman isn't a wide-eyed, young, care-free spirit who covers up in peasant skirts and tunics. Fashion has graduated from the bohemian look and literally grown older and wiser. The look now is bold and mature. It is catering to the grown and sexy.

Think Samantha from Sex and The City. Think Scarlett Johansson. Think of those glamorous, old-Hollywood actresses, who dressed to highlight their curves instead of conceal them. They exuded luxury and a ritzy lifestyle with their body-hugging dresses, elegant and understated jewels, perfectly applied make-up and fabulous accessories. But as Sophia Loren, a true definition of glamour, once said, the most important accessory isn't materialistic. "Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief she is beautiful," she said.

Indeed, every woman must have that power and confidence coming from within to project a truly beautiful self. It is true: if a woman doesn't love herself, who will love her back? So, dress the part this season and next with nothing on your mind but love for yourself and love for others. Oh, and of course, a love for fashion.

One of the top trends this season was the nude color palette. Out are bright hues, patterns and embroidery while undoubtedly in are simple and elegant looks. Over decoration has been over done and simplicity has been revived. "Elegance is refusal," is a powerful quote once said by designer Coco Chanel and many designers this season looked to that ideal

The usually over-the-top Christian Dior label featured an array of dresses in nudes during his Spring ’06 show, while Calvin Klein included nude-colored blouses in his. Almost every label, from J. Mendel to Alessandro Dell’Acqua, displayed a nude-hued item in their collection and that theme continued in many Fall ’06 shows. Much apparel was softened to fit in the new color scheme. These and many other collections most certainly had nothing but the inspiration of love on their minds. Why, what a greater way to be sexy and all the more loveable than dressing in flesh colored clothing? The soft, flirty hues of nude are at once graceful and bold. But perhaps the best thing about giving the illusion of a barely-there-outfit is that it draws attention to the woman, giving her an undeniable power. And nothing, darlings, is more sexy and loveable than a powerful woman.

Besides dressing in suggestive colored clothing, the changed silhouette can also be seen as one of the most important trends in all the fashion shows. The love-seeking and love-giving woman does not parade around in loose, unstructured clothing, excessive bead necklaces, messy hair, and over-the-top accessories. She wants to show off and not hide behind layers upon layers of apparel and accessories.  Therefore, the woman of this season and next accentuates her figure with waist cinching belts, makes a strong statement with one fabulous accessory and dramatizes with high platform or wedge heels. The woman of this season dresses to impress. To her, hip slung belts seem sloppy, too many accessories seem messy and flats seem boring. Perfect yourself this spring and fall and a perfect love may soon follow. Remember, the current inspiration for fashion is love. So, integrate that ideal into your wardrobe and soon you will be inspired to love and be loved as well.

As everyone from Ashlee Simpson to Faith Evans sing about matters of the heart, go ahead and jump on the bandwagon of love. You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

And, isn't that lovely? I'd say so.
