This summer is all about making a fashionably loud statement with the combination of bright colors. For example, fashion trends for this summer include exotic jungle prints, warm corals and bright colored crystal stones.
Thus, makeup must be complimentary to bright colored prints.
During the day, stick to a natural/nude look for the face so the makeup does not clash with bright clothing. Use light and glossy colors for a young and fresh look. A bronzer heats up one’s natural skin color by adding a subtle golden tint. Tarte’s new mineral powder bronzer ($28.00; sephora.com) gives the skin a glow and comes in either a light golden bronze or a deep shimmer bronze. Avoid using blush in order to keep the look subtle. However, if blush is needed to give life to the face, then apply a honey-colored blush, such as Neutrogena’s Soft Color blush in “sunny spice” ($8.99, available at local drugstores), on the cheeks and also on the temples.
The eyes should sparkle but not conquer take over the face. A trick to keep the eyes soft is to use body shimmer in place of eye shadow. Apply a dash of Hard Candy’s Shaker Body Shimmer ($15.00; hardcandy.com) on the lids for either a sparkly nude look in “brown sugar” or a sprinkle of a sexy sheer pink in “pink sugar.” And, avoid eyeliner by just using mascara on the eyelashes. Covergirl’s FantasticLash mascara ($5.79, available at local drugstore) includes a new waterproof formula, which is perfect for the summer.
Keep the lips almost colorless by choosing a clear lip-gloss. Try Too Faced’s Fat Kiss Lip-gloss ($18.50; sephora.com) that awakens the lips by delivering a soft, lucid shine. Pale lips are more sensual and will not clash with bright colors being worn.
On the contrary, live it up at night by taking the liberty to have fun with your makeup and play with a lot of color. For the eyes, replace the traditional “smoky” eyes with powerful colors. When lining the eyes, of course use very dark make-up that gives great emphasis to your eyes, but keep it colorful and bright with purple and/or green. Lancôme’s Le Crayon Khol ($20.50; sephora.com) comes in dramatic colors and glides on eyelids smoothly and easily.
Line the eye with a tasteful dark color and then use shimmer powder or a light pastel colored eye shadow on the eyelids.
When lining the eyes, elongate the shape of them by creating a cat-like look. Apply ModelCo’s LashXtend Mascara ($18.00; sephora.com) on the outer lashes only to achieve that sexy cat-eye look.
Combine the intense eyes with bronzer and nude, slightly tinted lips.
What’s NOT hot this summer?
When lining the eyes, avoid trying to make them round, that was the outdated look from last summer.
Stay away from using dark and intense colors on any part of the face besides the eyes. The makeup colors for summer are bright and not dark. Dark and brown colors are generally used during the winter months.
Bronze does not mean “super-tanned.” Keep the face looking healthy and natural so do not overuse a bronzer. Use it to sun-kiss the face, not to fry the face.
