The rise of Indie has been evident for a fair few years now. As a style that was once looked down on as ‘emo’, it has now taken a majority in our society and is seen daily in everyday life. So, the inevitable has happened; Indie has gone mainstream!
Of course, music is the most obvious place where Indie Rock has taken on a life of it’s own. The Feeling, The Fray, Maccabees and Temper Trap are a few of many indie rock artists that are storming the charts and the indie fan’s conversations. Also, Avril Lavigne and James Morrison are two solo indie artists that are huge names in the music business. From the days where pop music ruled the radio and R’n’B was always on our minds, indie rock has now taken over. Indie Rock gigs are said to be the best to go to, for the atmosphere and the fact that the bands are always totally independent. They write their own songs, they play their own instruments while singing on stage and they always deliver a brilliant show. A prime example of how Indie has gone mainstream is skinny jeans. They started off as a typical part of an indie wardrobe but now they are in all the high streets and are worn by the majority of the population. Cardigans were also doubted when they came back into fashion and were mainly worn by indie fans but have now swept through fashion and make an appearance in the majority of our wardrobes. Down to why Indie is so popular? Most people would admit surprise that Indie Rock music has become so internationally successful. Following previous crazes in American music; Jazz, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Hip Hop, Dance and Pop, Indie Rock can be seen as the complete opposite of most of these, with the closest to it being Rock ‘n’ Roll. Maybe it’s because the youth of the worlds preferences are ruling the charts at the moment. Maybe it could just be that tastes are changing, along with the trends. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that Indie has gone mainstream, it is a growing trend that has increased hugely over the last couple of years from a minority trend to a mainstream and it’s a safe bet that it will continue to grow until we are all Indie fans of some sort.
