There are rarely two competing products on the market, especially in technology and gaming, that we can't decide which we love more. Microsoft is more popular than Apple, Google is more popular than Bing. Even in the XBox versus Playstation there is room for preference. In the realm of band simulation gaming; however, the line in the sand is not so clearly drawn.
It is surprising, perhaps, that Guitar Hero does not hold the monopoly on such games - it was, after all, the first on the market and has been massively popular. Rock Band, released two years after Guitar Hero, however, has managed to cement itself in the hearts of gamers worldwide and seemingly become an equal contender. Rock Band's main advantage over Guitar Hero was in its combination of instruments. While Guitar Hero's were confined to playing little more than an air guitar, Rock Banders and their friends were able to sing, play and drum along to tracks, leaving Hero's in the musical dust. Guitar Hero soon retaliated by featuring instruments in its next release. With so many add-on instruments it is hard to separate the two games in terms of price. In fact, they both seem to be level pegging with first time gamers able to pick up the game for around $100. The main difference, it would seem, comes in the music available in game and available to buy from the internet. Many Rock Band gamers who have also experienced the world of Guitar Hero lament the former's lack of decent music offerings and downloads with Guitar Hero seeming to satisfy wannabe musicians far better. Both games seem set to continue with their individual fanbases. Guitar Hero, soon to be in the fifth instalment of the series might have the greater music catalog but this does not have seemed to give it too substantial a lead. Rock Band, it appears, has managed to scoop up the social aspect of the game early on and have expanded thus. Is there a preference then? Not really. The two games seem pretty equally matched but for a small lead for the original - Guitar Hero. Personally, Rock Band seems sleeker but, for someone who struggled to get to grips with just the guitar, that might not necessarily be a good thing. Quote this article on your site
