comiccon2010.jpgEvery summer self professed nerds from around the world descend upon San Diego, California for the annual Comic-Con convention. This festival has become more popular every year and overcrowding is often an issue. Who would have thought? This year over 140,000 patrons (often dressed in costume) attended the four day event held at the San Diego Convention Center from July 22nd-25th.

Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television, and related popular arts, the convention has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. Besides exhibitor displays, the convention also features panel discussions, autograph sessions, seminars, a costume party, a film festival, and exclusive toys only sold to convention attendees. Remarkably enough, the festival is put on by only 13 board members, 16-20 employees, and 80 volunteers and has remained a non-profit organization. Let’s move on to a few of the major highlights of this year’s convention:

The biggest piece of movie news had to be when Joss Whedon announced he was directing a movie based on the comic book Avengers. Joining him onstage for this announcement were cast members Robert Downey Junior, Scarlette Johannson, and Samuel L. Jackson. It was also announced that Chris Evans would play Captain America and Edward Norton would play The Hulk.

The biggest piece of video game news was the discussion regarding upcoming crossover fighter games. Namco will be releasing Street Fighter x Tekken whereas Capcom will be releasing Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Other big news included the announcement of the popular Nintendo 64 GoldenEye 007 game being updated and released for the Nintendo Wii gaming platform.

On the TV front, fans lined to catch a glimpse of the cast from the hit HBO series True Blood lead a panel discussion. After playing a clip of the second half of the season, cast members Anna Paquin (Sookie), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlott), Wesley (Tara Thorton), Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), and Chris Bauer (Detective Andy Bellefleur) entertained fan questions.

The biggest comic book related announcement at Comic Con had to be the announcement that Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim will be released in 2011. Every strip from creators Alex Raymond’s Sunday strip collection will be reprinted in oversized 12x16 format, restored and recolored and printed in their original format.” Oni Press was also gaining quite the buzz at Comic Con as the original publisher of the comic book that is the basis for the recently released Scott Pilgrim vs. The World movie.
