sciontc.jpgThere are few cars out there right now that offer the full package, but I'm here to tell you about one: Scion tC. This compact, sporty coupe seats five, has plenty of necessary horsepower (161 HP), key-less entry, power windows, and sunroof, all for under $20,000. No, that wasn't a typo. You can have this amazing car for under $20,000.

WHAT I LIKE:

Let's begin with the price as that is almost always the make-or-break decision, at least for me. Unlike other brands who are in bankruptcy, Toyota-owned Scion is making an effort to be consumer-friendly in these hard times. Scion vehicles are all priced under $20,000 and come equipped with all of the wonderful features that the other brands offer for a higher price. If other automakers hope to have a turnaround they should look to Scion for some pointers.

All of the Scion vehicles look compact, yet upon reviewing the Scion tC, along with the Scion xD and Scion xB (reviews coming soon!), I found that they actually have more legroom than most other cars. No joke. The secret is that Scion, well actually Toyota, has learned how to more efficiently build vehicles to not waste space on the interior.

Besides just the legroom, there is much more to like about the design of the tC. One of the surprising aspects of the design is that the tC is actually a hatchback. You wouldn't know it by simply looking at it, but it is indeed a hatchback. This offers some benefits of extra space and accessibility versus a typical trunk, plus it's just different and I like that. Another surprising aspect might be that despite the relatively cheap price-tag, the interior looks and feels upscale. The panoramic sunroof provides views for the driver and passenger, along with backseat passengers. And, to help make the car feel even more like a sports car it comes with bucket seats. If you're not happy with the standard look of the tC, Scion offers plenty of ways to customize your ride. This is something else that I have to give props to Scion for; they make it easy and affordable to customize your car the exact way you want.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:

Despite being compact and a product of Toyota, the Scion tC only gets around 24 mpg in the city, however it does improve quite a bit on the highway averaging 31 mpg. This is one area where I expected more and am sure that with upcoming models we will see a significant increase.

OVERALL:

At quick glance your first impression may be that the Scion tC is cheap and compact, but at further look you'll find that it's actually luxurious and spacious. As I mentioned at the beginning, the price is under $20,000. Manual starts around $18,000 and automatic around $19,000. Don't expect to haggle the price lower either as Scion has a "pure price" policy which means their prices are final, no negotiation. This sounds great to me, the less hassle in buying a car the better. I would recommend this as a perfect car for high school and college students. You can find Scion's at your local Toyota dealer.
