Crossovers are all the rage right now and we're not just talking about with soccer moms. The 2010 Ford Flex is the latest in the confusing crossover market. Is it an SUV? Is it a mini-van? What I do know is that the Ford Flex has the potential to be the ultimate party vehicle, and that's what matters most. Am I wrong?
What I Like?
Pack up to 6 of your friends in the Ford Flex. Whether you're heading to a concert, the beach, or a house party you can ride in luxury and look bad ass along the way.
The bold style of the Flex is obvious from the first glance. The long body style of the Flex is something I still haven't decided whether I love or hate. What I like about the design is that it's totally 100% different than anything else you will find on the road. The inside of the Flex is about as upscale as you can get and does not feel like box that it may appear to be from the outside. One key addition to the interior that I loved is a built-in cooler where you can store food or beverages. I can't count how many roadtrips I have been on when this would have been an amazing feature to have.
Continuing with the design features that I love. There is an optional multi-panel vista roof which is basically a sunroof that covers almost the entire roof allowing for all passengers to have a beautiful view in all directions.
The Flex accelerates surprisingly fast and is incredibly smooth despite it being such a large vehicle capable of hauling so many people.
What I Don't Like
I already mentioned my love/hate relationship with the long body style, but it's something I want to touch on again. When I first saw the Flex I actually compared it to a hearse. I'm still not in love with the design, but after some time the look has really grown on me. If you're like me, I suggest taking a closer look before writing it off simply due to the different look.
For those that can get past the awkward design, there are two more problems with the Flex to consider. The first being that you will only average around 18-20 mpg. This is still at the levels of SUV's from a decade ago. In other words, unacceptable. The other problem is that the price starts at $28,550. The starting price needs to be brought down to $25,000 and the gas mileage increased to an average 25 mpg.
Overall
This is exactly what it looks like: a large crossover vehicle that is perfect for a large family or if you travel with friends very frequently. If you don't fit either of those then I wouldn't go with the Flex, not because I don't love it, I actually love almost everything about the Flex. But, if you can go without the additional seating I think there are many other options out there that offer similar luxury at a better price point.
