It’s that time of year again. The time of year that single men and women all over the world mark on their calendars as the day they dread the most—a day so vile that some people would much rather just forget about getting out of bed altogether.
But don’t fret. This year on February 14th, instead of sitting at home alone wondering why you aren’t with someone, remember that you’re already in a very significant relationship, and that you just might not know it yet. It’s one of the most rewarding and feel-good relationships you will ever have. One that means you will never really be left alone with “nothing to look forward to on Valentine’s Day”.
It’s the relationship you have with yourself.
Before you write this off as just another cheesy pick-me-up article, think about why you think it’s so darn awful to be single—especially on Valentine’s Day. Chances are all the reasons you come up with are really just ploys created by the media to make you feel bad or to make you go out and buy some of their products. If there were no advertisers out there to barrage you with images that make you feel abnormal, I bet you would feel a little bit better about yourself come February 14th. So forget about society telling you that it’s only normal to be in a relationship—it’s not anymore normal than being single.
The thing is, you honestly don’t even need to be in a relationship and you shouldn’t have to be one-half of a couple when you already complete yourself. People always yearn to be in love and to be in a relationship, but the greatest relationship you can ever really have is the one you have with yourself. If you love yourself and are truly and completely happy in your own skin, you don’t need a man or woman. Sure, it might be nice to have a boyfriend or girlfriend, but at the end of the day, the only person you can really rely on is you.
So, if you’re not used to feeling good about yourself on a daily basis, the best way to start is by simply taking care of your body and your needs. The most obvious way to do this is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep and exercise while eating healthy and nutritious foods. Not only will you be treating your body well, but you’ll start feeling really great, too. Also, always make time for socializing with friends and never forget to laugh! Try to enjoy every second of life even on those bad days.
Secondly, when interacting with others, don’t forget to speak your mind and never be afraid to say “no.” If you’re constantly putting others before you and letting them have their way, you’ll never be pleased or happy with your life because you won’t have control over it. Always keep in mind that you are worthy of attention and respect and that if you’re in need, or don’t agree with something, honor your feelings and make it known. Trust me, if they really care about you, your loved ones won’t mind.
One other thing you can do to build a better, stronger self-relationship is to make time for yourself. Think about your hobbies and interests and make sure you get to do at least one of these things daily. It could be from listening to your favourite music on full-blast, to taking a walk during lunch, to finally signing up for that dance class you’ve been putting off. It doesn’t matter as long as you don’t forget to nurture yourself by constantly cultivating what makes you who you are.
Now, even if you are currently in a relationship, you still need to remember to take care of yourself and to remember your own needs. Keep your life as your own and never let your partner take up all your time. Your friends and family will not only miss you, but they might resent you for it. The key is to prioritize and strike a balance.
Lastly, never forget that confidence always shines through. If you can love who you are then who says someone else won’t feel the same way one day? Never give up hope and always believe that you are capable and deserving of good things. Significant others may come and go, but you’re stuck with your body for life, so you might as well make the most of it.
And who knows? You might just end up liking it.
