At the age of 14, she made a life changing decision and “realized that if I wanted to get healthy, I couldn’t dance anymore, so I stopped it and picked up guitar instead.” It is at this time she started creating melodies with the guitar for her poems. Charlotte says she decided she wanted a career in the music industry, “as soon as she found out what attention was.” During her high school years, she wrote over 100 songs and formed the local band J. Poland and The Pilots. In 2004, she signed with Crush Management. She also became the subject of a 2004 Elle Girl article about a high school student trying to get a record deal. This goal was only momentarily sidetracked when Charlotte was diagnosed with condylar resorption and had to undergo facial reconstructive surgery. As a result of this condition, her jaw was wired shut and splinted for several months. During this time though, Charlotte wrote songs for her first studio album, “Waves and the Both of Us,” which was released last May. The beats on the album are reminiscent of Jason Mraz and Kimya Dawson combined with the lyrical content of Avril Lavigne and The Veronicas. The first single “How I Could Just Kill A Man,” is gaining much commercial success and is being played on radio stations across the nation as well as VH1 and MTV. This summer Charlotte toured the United States on the Vans Warped Tour and this fall she is heading out on the road with Gavin Degraw. She is signed to Geffen Records and is label mates with the likes of Ashlee Simpson, Kate Nash, Macy Gray, and Nelly Furtado.
