Rock bands are often stereotyped as having a limited sound range- for having harsh, rough songs with a sound described often as plain "noise." Many rock bands today are more complex than many people give them credit for: increasingly, bands are incorporating intricate guitar patterns, layered instrumental parts, and detailed lyrics full of metaphors and personal experiences that can not only leave the audience with a connection to that band, but can give the audience an opportunity to relate the emotions and feelings conveyed within the songs to their own lives.
Death Cab For Cutie Death Cab For Cutie consists of Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla, Jason McGerr, and Nick Harmer. Death Cab For Cutie labels itself as "Alternative/Indie/Rock" and most fans could agree that this band lives up to it's label; although some songs differ greatly in the emotional impact they might induce from the audience, the overall sense from this band could be summed up by its label of alternative indie rock. Many songs in the DCFC catalog could be considered soothing, but some of the most tranquil songs include "Steadier Footing," "Stable Song," and "Little Fury Bugs." The New Pornographers The New Pornographers title themselves as an "indie/rock/powerpop" band; coming from Vancouver, British Columbia, The New Pornographers brings an eruption of vocals and melodies to their band. The New Pornographers has a very unique sound, including many different instruments and vocals within each song- The New Pornographers consists of A.C. Newman, Blaine Thurier, Danny Behar, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, Kurt Dahle, Neko Case, and Todd Fancey. Not only does the main vocalist differentiate between songs, but so does the style of music. Some songs are quite upbeat (Mass Romantic, Jackie Dressed in Cobras), while song "Challengers" can easily fit into the category of soft/soothing. Tegan and Sara Tegan and Sara Quin were born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Since their debut cd, "Under Feet Like Ours," they have released "This Business of Art," "If It Was You," "So Jealous," and "The Con." Although this band has often been referred to as a 'duo,' the two girls have ensured that their sound remain powerful and strong, no matter how many members and instruments are necessary to produce the anticipated results. Although Tegan and Sara label themselves as indie/pop/alternative, their sound can be interpreted variously depending on the particular album and song one picks out. Tegan and Sara both write their own songs, separate from each other, and so the particular theme can vary between songs and records accordingly. Sara Quin is a very reflective song writer; she often strives to write songs that are interesting and unique, reflecting on situations that may contain controversial, public, or private issues. "I Can't Take It" was a song that Sara wrote for the fourth Tegan and Sara album, "So Jealous." This song is very instrumental and although it only contains few words, the words are very impactful to the listener; Sara obviously felt a lot of emotions while writing this song, and her emotions are effectively conveyed to the audience through this song. Ra Ra Riot Ra Ra Riot hails from Syracuse, New York and considers themselves to be healing and easy listening music. Ra Ra Riot is currently on tour with Death Cab For Cutie, and accordingly have a slightly similar poppy, yet soothing, sound. Their melodic rhythm and enrapturing voices can captivate any audience; this band is not the typical four member bass, guitar and drums- Ra Ra Riot brings into their sound the use of guitar, cello, keyboards, drums, bass, and violin. For a soothing track, check out "Ghost Under Rocks." City and Colour Dallas Green began his musical career as a member of the hardcore/rock/indie band "Alexisonfire." Although Dallas hails from the small town of St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, he has certainly made a big name for himself in the music industry. After having achieved a significant level of success within the band Alexisonfire, Dallas decided he wanted to expand his musical career. With this, he began to start a side project, of City and Colour. City and Colour brings to it a very acoustic, soft sound, where most of the music can be described as sombre/reflective. Although many of Dallas' songs could fit into the category of "soothing songs," a few include "Against the Grain," and "Hello I'm In Delaware." Quote this article on your site
