There has been a trend in Hollywood for years of actor’s crossing over into the music scene. Once an actor becomes successful, they are presented with endless opportunities, singing often being one. Likewise, artists often use acting as a means to advance their music career. Both careers are very similar and can work simultaneously to develop someone as a brand. Let’s take a look at three actors who are currently attempting to break into the music scene:
Taylor Momsen is known to most as Jenny Humphrey of the hit CW show Gossip Girl. Besides acting, this talented 16 year old is a model with IMG Models and lead singer and guitarist of the band The Pretty Reckless. The Pretty Reckless is signed to Interscope Records and is currently on tour supporting The Veronicas. The sound is described by Momsen as "not what people are going to expect" being very similar to rock and roll but having "lighter, fun stuff as well." Momsen is responsible for writing all the music on the album which she describes as “hearing my life, so you’re hearing my diaries.” Influences of the band include Sound Garden, Audioslave, Hole, and Nirvana. The album is scheduled to be released later this year.Adrian Grenier of HBO’s Entourage is responsible for drums, guitar, and vocals in the 4 member band The Honey Brothers. He plays alongside banjo, guitar, ukulele, and vocalist Andrew Vladeck; ukulele, keyboard, and vocalist Ari Gold; and guitarist and vocalist DS Posner. They describe themselves as “new wave folk” and “glam ukulele rock.” Demonstration, a 4 song EP available exclusively on iTunes and Amazon MP3, was released this June. This summer they can be seen playing at the Wanderlust Festival (July 24), All Points West Festival (August 1), Osheaga Festival (August 2), and Bumbershoot Festival (September 6). Scarlett Johansson, star of blockbusters such as The Horse Whisperer and Lost in Translation, is set to release a 9 track duet album with Pete Yorn titled Break Up on September 9th, 2009. The Break Up was inspired when Yorn “was having a strange week of insomnia and when I finally passed out, it came to me in a dream. I woke up and the whole thing was in my head, fully formed." Johansson also said in December 2008 that she is working on a follow-up to her first album that will feature all original music. The release date for that album is still unknown.
