In 2000, her song ‘Graduation (friends forever)’ could be heard at almost every prom, graduation ceremony, and party across the country. Vitamin C was born Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick on July 20, 1972. At the age of 16 she began writing songs and poetry, and music soon became apart of her life. “I actually wanted to write songs more than I wanted to sing because I felt like I had something to say,” she said. Back in 2000 we all knew what she was up to, but where is she now?
She attended NYU in 1991, where she unknowingly met her future husband, Michael Kotch. At the time, he and his twin brother, Ben, were in search of a female vocalist for their band. After an audition Fitzpatrick easily was given the job. Together, the band was called Eve’s Plum and they later signed with Sony Records. By 1993, they released their first single ‘Blue’, and three years later they were dropped by the company for not selling enough records. In 1999, Elektra Records signed Colleen as a solo act and she became known asVitamin C. After the release of her album, which went platinum, she suddenly became a hot commodity. She had a Barbie Doll made in her image and designer Tommy Hillfiger put a special shade of lipstick based on her hair color into production. She quickly became recognized not only for her vibrant hair but for her hit song, "Graduation." The song reached number four on the Billboard Top 100 Singles and was a hit in the United States, Canada, and in Europe. She later ventured off into the movie world, taking on rolls in The Naked Gun 2 1/2, Liar Liar, The Mambo Kings, Get Over It, and landing a starring role in the 2000 remake of Dracula. However, she did not forget her musical roots and started working on her new album while filming. The album was called ‘More’ and carried a whole different sound than what she had previously produced. It was darker, edgier, and harder but didn't do as well on the charts, only reaching # 122. Elektra decided to drop Vitamin C because her album did so poorly. She was then signed to V2 Records in the UK.. She released her single ‘Last Nite’ only in the UK in 2003, but it flopped, only reaching #70 as it’s peak on the charts. She was then dropped by V2 Records, as well. In 2006, MTV News interviewed Fitzpatrick and she revealed that she was planning a comeback under the name Vitamin C, with two new albums. She was finishing work on a children's world-music album that would celebrate diversity through songs like the Indian-styled "Bhangra On and On" and "We All Share the Same Sky,". In early 2007, People Magazine interviewed Fitzpatrick and she stated the albums would be out by the end of that year. She also wrote songs for the popular teen shows “Unfabulous” and “Darcy’s Wildlife”. It has been almost a decade since Vitamin C has been in the spotlight. Even though she has been laying low, she seems to be eagerly anticipating her comeback. Today, she is signed to Jive Records and is working on her new album, which will hopefully be released soon.
