Are you livin’ la vida loca? While Ricky Martin was shakin’ his bon-bon and drinking from the cup of life during the 90s, he became a global sensation and will always be known as one of the most iconic Latin pop stars of all time. But where did his career begin? And where the heck is he now? Teen Scene’s got the scoop!
Born in Puerto Rico in 1971, Ricky Martin grew up with a strict religious background and attended church regularly. He was leading an “Average Joe” lifestyle until he joined a band in 1984 called Menudo. This Puerto Rican pop band was a huge sensation during the 70s and 80s. The five members of the band changed over time, as most people claim that younger members had to replace growing kids. Over 15 hot Latinos, including Ricky Martin, joined Menudo over the years. And while Menudo is still making music today, they have never been as popular since the time when Ricky Martin joined the band.
In the early 90s, Ricky Martin left Menudo to pursue a solo career. After dabbling in a bit of soap opera acting, he released several Spanish gold records. Combining his acting skills with his musical talents, Ricky Martin appeared on Broadway (in New York) in Les Miserables. However, the main reason we all know and love this sexy Latin singer is for his crossover to English, which happened in 1999. Ricky Martin’s first English single was Livin’ La Vida Loca. Many people also know the tune The Cup of Life (La Copa de La Vida), because the song was already made popular in 1998 as the anthem for the FIFA World Cup. Other hits include She Bangs (which was brought back to life by American Idol cast away William Huang) and Nobody Wants to Be Lonely (which he belted out with pop diva Christina Aguilera). So after all of the fame and success, where is Ricky Martin now? After headlining a few European and international tours in the mid-2000s and earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007, Ricky took some time off to father is twin boys (Matteo and Valentino) that were born in 2008. He certainly has his hands full with his kids, so he’s not creating music at the moment. However, he is pushing the sales of. 17, a second anthology of Spanish-language greatest hits from 1991-2007.
