Box office blockbusters and MTV reality shows are cool, but there’s nothing more real than a documentary. Teen Scene is here to bring you our picks for the Top 3 documentaries within the last few years.
Planet B-boy (2007)
Instead of watching America’s Best Dance Crew with tons of commercial breaks, why not tune into Planet B-Boy, a full-length documentary film with zero interruptions?
Planet B-Boy, as its name suggests takes you into the world of breakdancing in France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the United States. The film follows five crews as they prepare for a big face-off at the Battle of the Year in Germany, where crews from 19 different countries compete for a title of best in the world!
Why is Planet B-Boy on the top list? The film does more than show the crews bustin’ a move. You get to experience their entire lives. You see their friends cheer them on to a hopeful victory. You see their families support their efforts. It teaches us that there is more to life than a dance, a game or a performance.
American Teen (2008)
Have you ever seen 1980s cult classic The Breakfast Club? That movie centers on stereotypical highschoolers as they spend a day in detention. How about watching a real-life Breakfast Club? American Teen follows the lives of four Indiana teenagers for 10 months through their senior year of high school.
Viewers of the film refer to the four kids as the Jock (Colin), the Geek (Jake), the Popular Girl (Megan) and the Artsy Girl (Hannah). Instead of being in detention, like the Breakfast Clubbers, the kids in this documentary showcase their entire lives: heartbreaks, fights, insecurities, relationships, friendships and more. This film goes beyond the typical stereotypes of every day teenagers. For example, another jock-type guy named Mitch starts dating artsy Hannah in spite of what his popular friends think of her.
American Teen made the Top 3 because it shows us that we’re not alone. We all have our struggles, just like the kids in this film. We’ve all seen the cliques. We’ve all been heartbroken by a relationship, a friendship or something else we counted on… that let us down. And in the end, everything works out somehow, just like in American Teen.
Girls Rock (2007)
It’s been a long time since you rock and rolled! You should check out the Girls Rock documentary, which follows five 18 year old gals at a Rock-n-Roll Camp for ladies in… get this… Portland, Oregon. Forget the bright lights of NYC or the outdoor stages of LA. Oregon is where it’s at!
The camp helps young women ages 8 to 18 perfect their songwriting/instrumental skills. But most importantly, the 60 volunteer-counselors give the girls the chance to build more self-confidence. The film closely follows five young women whose struggles hinder them from developing their musical skills.
All of the girls at camp split up into groups based on the kind of music they like. They then form bands and begin the songwriting. At the end of camp, there’s a big rock concert!
Girls Rock is one of Teen Scene’s top three docs because it encourages all of us to dream big. You don’t have to be a gal to appreciate this documentary. All you need is an open mind. You’ll learn that you can do anything you put your mind to, and there are a lot of people who can help you get there.
