Independent movies- they aren't big blockbusters. They don't play at every single movie theater in your town. Unless they get noticed by someone in Hollywood who puts a lot of money into letting the rest of the world know about the flick, you may not even hear about some of them. If you have heard of some, though, maybe you're against seeing one of them because of the label "independent." Hopefully, that's not the case. Indie films are unique, creative, and one of a kind. They'll keep you thinking (unpredictability is a great quality for a film). With 2009 ending, if you still haven't picked your best movie of the year, here are a few that you may or may not heard of. All worth checking out, of course. Hey, I bet your favorite actors started out in films like these.
Paranormal Activity
To keep it simple- this movie is about a whole lot of nothing that will force you to sleep with the lights on. The plot may not be thick, but that's quite alright. It doesn't need to be. This year's (or decade's) Blair Witch was made by two people on an incredibly tight budget, $15,000 give or take. Luckily, it was picked up by a big studio and thrown into theaters everywhere so it has a chance to freak out everyone.
Paper Heart
Real life couple Michael Cera (ya know, that guy from Juno) and Charlyne Yi star as versions of themselves in a movie about two actors in a relationship. Yi travels across the country to figure out the one subject she doesn't understand: love.
Let the Right One In
Twilight fan? Then give this vampire movie a try. Not a Twilight fan? Perfect! Give this a try! This flick is sweeping the awards circuit- including several Best Film, Best Director and Best Foreign Film prizes. It's about a 12-year-old boy who becomes friends with the female vampire who lives next door.
(500) Days of Summer
Boy meets girl, boy loses girl. But does boy get girl back? This movie isn't set up the way your typical romantic comedy is, and that's a good thing! You still get the whole story, but in a roundabout "what's gonna happen next" way. This may just end up being one of your favorite romantic comedies of all time.
Sunshine Cleaning
Down and out? Does life seem like it can't get any worse? Then team up with a sibling and start a business cleaning up crime scenes. The sisters in this movie find deeper meaning in their work, and lighten the morose atmosphere with great spirits.
