nightmareelmst.jpgIt’s been a while since I have written anything so you have my sincerest apologizes Teen Sceners. My tour schedule has been anything but easy and most of my free time has been geared towards the book I am writing. So let me begin by saying, congrats Teen Scene on turning 10 years old! Ten years is a long time and the magazine has certainly grown. I was fortunate enough to meet our editor Chad many years ago when he was first starting out. I remembered when he interviewed me that he was going to do something special with this magazine and he sure has. So again congratulations to Chad and the entire Teen Scene universe. Now here we go…

Since this is the tenth anniversary of Teen Scene I decided to write about another anniversary that took place last year. It was the 25th anniversary of the Nightmare On Elm Street series and the birth of everyone’s favorite-gloved serial dream killer, Freddy Krueger. I am sure that some of our loyal readers were not even born in the year 1984, however yours truly was a very curious, if not strange, little WWE fan, who happened to catch a preview of A Nightmare on Elm Street one night during wrestling. I had not really been introduced to horror movies yet but I felt I was ready and I begged and pleaded with my parents to take me to see it. They weren’t budging. After all how many parents wanted to take their 6 year old son to see some burned up maniac slicing and dicing teenagers? After many failed attempts I became desperate and as the story goes I offered to clean my room and every other room in the house for the rest of my life and I had to make many reassurances that there would be no real life Freddy Krueger nightmares. My mom relented and the next Saturday we drove to an afternoon showing of the film. Movie tickets in 1984 I believe were only around three dollars so it was quite the bargain. What happened that day would change my childhood forever. Freddy fascinated me. Maybe other kids were scared by the movie but it had a different effect on me. I became what was known back then as  “Fred Head”. I had t-shirts, video games, costumes, and at one point I think I may have bunked up with a talking Freddy Doll. Go ahead and laugh kids, but I am sure some of you are dreaming next to an Edward Cullen doll….slightly less cool!

My parents were so great about everything. With the release of every new Elm Street movie I was given money and a ride to see it, always more than once. I felt that at some point that I would out grow these movies but it never happened. The original movie spawned 7 sequels and a television series. When Freddy vs. Jason came out, I was there on opening night in a Freddy t-shirt letting my geek flag fly, but I didn’t care because I was with the hottest girl in the theater and yes America I geek out for Freddy Krueger. Last year I even had the opportunity to visit the house that was used as Nancy’s home and subsequently Freddy’s house after the first film. It looked exactly the same as it did 26 years ago. I got some serious goose bumps when I walked up to the door of 1428 Elm Street. Actually, that’s not the real street name but I am going to keep that as my little secret (Google it if you really want to know). Overall this iconic series and that legendary character have played a major part in my life. I am not a Star Wars geek, nor am I a Trekkie, but I will always be a die-hard fan of the Elm Street Saga, and at some point I will pay tribute to it by adding a Freddy piece to my tattoo collection that is growing at a rapid pace.

For 25 years, Robert Englund has played Freddy and he has been nothing short of spectacular. It’s amazing to think that an actor who was trained in some of the most prestigious acting schools in the world would become so famous for portraying a horror iconic but he did it and he did it flawlessly. He added the right amount of humor and evil to the character and has himself become just as beloved as the part he has so effortlessly mastered. Which is why almost every Englund/Krueger fan in the world was shocked when we found out that on April 30th, 2010 a new man would wear the glove. That’s right Elm Street is getting the remake treatment. Uberproducer Michael Bay, who has brought us less than stellar versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th, has made a brand new version of A Nightmare on Elm Street starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy. Haley was a child star in the famed Bad News Bears movies who disappeared for many years until making a comeback with an Oscar nomination and a star turn as Rohrshack in The Watchmen.

“Nightmare” is a classic movie and it does not deserve to be treated with such disrespect and certainly I would rather have no one bring Freddy back from the dead if Robert Englund wasn’t going to be portraying him. At least that’s what I thought before I viewed the trailer. This movie actually looks like it has everything the original had and more. It stars a great young cast featuring my very own celebrity crush, miss Katie Cassidy, and for all of you Twilight lovers out there, Kellen Lutz. I am really even getting excited about our new Freddy. He has brought the evil menacing version of Freddy out of retirement.

The movie will premiere on April 30th and I plan to be at the midnight showing. I may even dust off a Freddy shirt for old times sake. Now where to find a hot girl?

Writer’s Note:
For all of you Elm Street fans I just want to make you aware of the ultimate Nightmare on Elm Street documentary. It’s called Never Sleep Again and you are going to want to own this. It will be available for purchase later on this month and these guys pulled out all the stops with the interviews. It’s a who’s who of past and present Elm Street stars.
