Natalie Portman was born on June 9th, 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel. She lived there for three years, yet moved to the States, moving from Washington, to Connecticut then finally settling in Long Island. Her mother was an artist and also acts as her agent, whilst her father is a doctor. Dancing since she was 4 years old, trained in tap, ballet and jazz, Portman was destined to find a career in entertainment. At the young age of 11, Natalie was discovered by an agent at a Pizza Parlor and though a career in modeling was available, she turned to acting instead. Her debut movie was ‘Leon’ in 1994, a powerful film where she received great reviews. Although she is very young, Natalie Portman is on of Hollywood’s most respected actresses, nominated for an Oscar and has received a golden globe amongst many other awards.
Perhaps most well known for shaving all her hair off for the film ‘V for Vendetta’ or even playing Queen Amidala in Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III, however Natalie Portman is also a keen, yet understated eco-friendly celebrity. She was named the most eco-friendly star, beating the likes of Brad Pitt and Leonardo Di Caprio, both of whom are also known for helping the environment, by the campaigners at Grist.org. Portman has done a lot, from trying to help gorillas in Rwanda, her role for promoting a low-energy light bulb company and also launching a vegan shoe range in which she donated all profits to charity to.
Growing up being a child actress can be tough and some have fallen under the pressure. However, Natalie Portman did not, and has been an excellent role model to many. Turning down films if she had to do nudity as she wanted to be a positive role model for girls, and would therefore choose only positive roles, Portman has been an excellent example to children. Well known for turning away from her film career to study at the prestigious Harvard University ‘I'm going to college. I don't care if it ruined my career. I'd rather be smart than a movie star’, she really is an inspiration to all.
Natalie Portman is an actress to be treasured, her grounded morals have enlightened many and her eco friendly activities have been admirable. Teen Scene wishes Portman the best of luck for 2009 and hopes to see her soon.
