VH1 calls her the “reigning queen of kick-butt” as atestament to her lineup of science fiction and action themed movies. Fashion recognizes her since she was eleven years old. In 1994, her musical album, The Divine Comedy, was critically acclaimed and added to her list of achievements. Who is this woman, you may ask? Milla Jovovich, of course.
Jovovich was born on December 17, 1975 in Kiev, Ukraine to a Serbian politician and Soviet stage actress. At the age of five, the family moved to London, then Sacramento, California, before finally settling in Los Angeles. A smart girl, Milla learned fluent English at her public schools in three months shortly after arriving in the United States. At the age of nine, she left public school behind to concentrate on her budding career. Prima signed her onto their agency as a model at the age of eleven. Revlon took notice of her and her inclusion in the “Most Unforgettable Women in the World” advertisement officially launched her modeling. Jovovich appeared in magazines like The Face, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, and In Style. After focusing for a few years on her music (the result of which would be The Divine Comedy), her breakthrough into Hollywood would be in 1997 as the lead female in Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element. Starring alongside Bruce Willis, Jovovich was lauded for holding her own despite being a newcomer. In 1998, she acted in the Spike Lee drama He Got Game as an abused prostitute, and in 1999, she returned to the action genre as the title character in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. Three years later, Jovovich appeared in the horror/action film Resident Evil, which granted her international success as her character Alice. She would reprise the role in the 2004 sequel, and again in 2007 in the series’ third installment. Along with her successful acting, musical, and modeling career, Jovovich is also known for her fashion design, launching the Jovovich-Hawk clothing line in 2003 with her fellow supermodel Carmen Hawk. The line is currently in its third season, and the dresses and other ready-wear can be found at high end stores such as Fred Segal and Harvey Nichols. Recently, Jovovich signed a deal to market a “diffusion collection” for Target’s Go International campaign in 2007. From this list of accomplishments, it is clear that Milla Jovovich was not and is still not an unremarkable individual. Rather than limiting herself to one career, she has repeatedly taken the initiative and explored other careers, following her own dreams rather than a set plan for herself. In 2006, Jovovich even expressed the desire to publish her diaries as an autobiography, writing about what she humbly calls “all the mad things she’s done”. She also states that “[she’s] not sure how interested anyone would be in publishing it, or reading it, for that matter.” You sure about that, Miss. Jovovich?
