 New York Fashion Week was held this past September for the 2010 spring collection of celebrated designers such as Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Marc Jacobs, Chanel, and numerous others. The designers named are some of the most well-known fashion designers of the world. If I were to say Malene Grotrian, Sophie Théallet, and Rachel Comey what design of theirs would come to mind? Maybe nothing, but you may conjure up an image of three designers, women presumably, that you know nothing about and may want to learn more. These three designers presented their spring collection at New York Fashion Week alongside the fashion veterans. These three women's collections are very "indie", the fabrics are bright, flowing and functional. You can find similar designs in your local stores, as well as the stores mentioned below.
Name: Malene Grotrian
Clothing Line: Ready to Wear Spring 2010
Claim to Fame: This year's only Canadian designer anf FIRST Vancouver
designer to showcase design at New York Fashion Week. Grotrian was
invited to show her clothing during New York Fashion Week after
receiving a standing ovation at the Vancouver Fashion Week in March.
Likes: The texture of the clothing is very tailored with Japanese
designs. Despite the tailored look it stilll has a simplicity that
makes it perfect for everyday wear.
Signature Piece(s): The ruffles is a character style that will be easy

The Collection: Sophie Theallet's collection varies between American
inspired designs as well as romantic designs. By watching the models
walk the runway in this collection the audience can see the fine detail
in Theallet's work.
Signature Piece(s): Smocking and Pleating of the fabric. There are some
dressier pieces along with evergreen silhouettes. The fabric of the
design is draped, haltered and some are even manipulated into a sari
look.

Clothing Line: Ready to Wear Spring 2010; Originally begin as a
menswear line in 2001 but is focused primarily on womenswear. Footwear
is unisex and is continually designed for both sexes in numeorus styles
and colors. The line is often vintage inspired but it has a
rock-and-roll feel as well.
Claim to Fame: When one of Comey's designs was worn by musician, writer, and actor David Bowie on the 'David Letterman Show'.
Likes: The functionality of this collection is great for everyday wear
and can be worn to school, work and directly to a party at a friend's
place.

The design on the skirt gives a more everyday look to the skirt that
was worn on the runway. The design is still the same so the look is
still attainable. You can pair a camisole with the skirt preferably
a soft pallette color such as peach. Models in this particular
collection wear earthtone colored belts which is worn with the loose
fitting shirts in order to give the allusion of curves.
Sophie Théallet, Rachel Comey, and Malene Grotrian made big waves
during their showing of their Spring 2010 collection. Although this was
some of their first times, their designs were well received by fellow
designers and buyers alike. To consider someone's design as Indie it
must be out of the norm, free-flowing, bright, soft and functional.
Althoug everyone has a different idea of what a certain style is,
whether the style be mod, bohemian,urban glam, or even indie, it is always a
good a idea to place your own personality into the statement.
