To begin adopting any type of style, it is important to know its roots. Indie is short for independent and is associated with the arts - music, literature, film, and so on. If it’s outside mainstream and not affiliated with a big corporate name, it’s indie. Today, indie is also a style. It’s a way of life to represent cool and different. Being indie is all about being cool and yourself. So let’s get started!
Before you hit the mall, you may want a few pointers. Since indie is all about being cool and relaxed, the fashion has to be that way, too. Never overdo it; keep it simple. For beginners, just starting off with a few basic plain T-shirts is perfect. Get them in any color if you’d like (neon colors are very cool and indie right now!), but remember, buy them a little big. Make them slouch a bit, but nothing drastic. Pair it with some skinny jeans and flats and you’re good to go. If you want to take it up a notch, instead of just a plain shirt, maybe get some screen tees. For ladies, dresses are always in. A jersey dress or tank dress with a skinny waist belt is the ideal outfit. Try mixing up colors if you want. If the dress is on the darker side, throw in a bright yellow skinny waist belt. Now, with the weather changing, maybe wear a pair of bright colored tights with it to keep warm. Also, cardigans and sweater vests are a must and can completely transform an outfit. Accessorizing is also very important in indie fashion. Try out some oversized sunglasses, scarves, bracelets, necklaces, pins, headphones, and off-beat bags. Also, as far as make up goes, keep it simple. Use neutral eye shadows like brown, tan, and peach. Apply tinted moisturizer, topped off with blush. Remember, less is definitely more. Indie fashion isn’t just for girls, though. Guys can dress indie, too. Again, you can always keep it simple. A basic T-shirt in any color is great. V-necks and flannel shirts are also very popular to wear now. For bottoms, corduroys, straight leg jeans, and pants are all acceptable. You can even try out different colors like light blue, purple, and white. With colder months coming, outerwear such as cardigans, leather jackets, patterned sweatshirts, and plain fleece hoodies are excellent. Shoes may include Moccasins (which add a unique and antique touch), Vans, and Converse. Following these guidelines should have you well on your way to dressing indie. Have fun and put your own individual style into it! Photo Credit: http://www.orangebeautiful.com/blog/pics/3137.jpg Quote this article on your site
